Labor Government Commits $20 Million for Wally Hagan Stadium Redevelopment

A historic moment has arrived for the Cockburn Basketball Association (CBA) and the entire Cockburn community, that a re-elected Cook Labor Government will commit $20 million towards the much-anticipated redevelopment of Wally Hagan Stadium. This $60 million transformative project will bring a state-of-the-art 10-court facility, that will serve as the home of the Cougar Family for generations to come.

Wally Hagan Stadium, the proud home of the Cockburn Cougars, has long been at the heart of basketball in Cockburn. With more than 3500 members and over 350 children on the waiting list, the demand for more court space has grown significantly. The redevelopment of the much-anticipated Wally Hagan Stadium and Cockburn ARC West will include 10 courts, a modern health club gym, café, creche, updated changerooms and amenities, expanded seating & parking, and improved accessibility.

Tia Ucich, CEO of the Cockburn Basketball Association, celebrated the announcement, saying, “This is a once-in-a-generation moment for the Cougar Family. The Labor Government’s commitment of $20 million is a monumental step forward in securing our future home. The redevelopment will ensure the CBA remains the place where families, players, and fans can come together to build lasting memories. This development is not just for today, but for future generations to come.”

Ucich continued, “The achievement today is a testament to the vision, passion, and tireless efforts of many individuals who have worked relentlessly to turn this dream into reality. I want to take a moment to thank the past and present leaders, staff, and volunteers of the Cockburn Basketball Association, as well as the broader community, for their unwavering commitment to making this project a reality. A special thank you goes to the City of Cockburn, Minister Simone McGurk & Mr David Scaife MLA whose support of the local community and focus on enhancing sporting infrastructure has been pivotal in driving this project forward. I would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Premier Cook and the Western Australian Government for their significant investment, recognising the important role that sport plays in our community”.

The $60 million Cockburn ARC West & Wally Hagan redevelopment, will not only cater to the ever-growing basketball community but will also be a cornerstone for community events, multiple sporting competitions, improve health and well-being throughout the Cockburn community and foster social connection.

Nina Nash, President of the Cockburn Basketball Association, expressed her pride in seeing the redevelopment take shape, stating, “This is an incredibly exciting milestone for our Cougar Family and the entire Cockburn community. Wally Hagan Stadium has been the backbone of our sporting culture for decades, and with this commitment, it can now continue to be a home for our athletes, volunteers, and supporters for generations to come. This is a legacy project that will shape the future of basketball in our community, and we are so grateful to the Labor Government for making this commitment”.

“This is a historic moment for the Cockburn Basketball Association and the Cougar Family,” added Nash. “But the job isn’t done yet. This $60 million project can’t proceed without Federal Government support. We’re now calling on Federal leaders to ensure we can meet the needs of this growing community.”

Thank you to the Cougar Family and to everyone who has supported this project along the way – your contributions have made this moment possible. We look forward to sharing information and updates as the redevelopment progresses.
