Olivia Bassett-Scarfe has made the move to the Cockburn Cougars women’s program for 2021, adding to a young core group for NBL1.
19-year-old Bassett-Scarfe played for the Mandurah Magic in the 2020 West Coast Classic, averaging 8 points and 5 rebounds while starting all 11 games.
Cockburn Chief Executive and women’s head coach Tyrone Thwaites said Bassett-Scarfe is excited about her future as a wing in the NBL1, with an opportunity to learn from Victorian recruit Taylah Simmons a big draw card.
“Liv’s (Bassett-Scarfe) future at this level requires her to develop into a strong-wing, and we want to help her fast-track that while learning from Taylah (Simmons) next year,” Thwaites said.
“Taylah can play as a guard and as a forward, and that’s the level of versatility we really want to bring out in Liv.
“She (Bassett-Scarfe) has a strong work-ethic and has already been putting the extra on and off-court work in, so we are really confident about how well she will fit inside our young group.
“Liv is from Mandurah, but going to University in Fremantle helps give her a close Cockburn connection, and she’s just a great young athlete to be around.
“I’m excited to see her evolve over as a long-term Cougar over the next few seasons.”
“There’s a culture here (at Cockburn) geared towards constant improvement and getting better every day, and that is something I want to be a part of,” Bassett-Scarfe said.
“Everything I do is team first, and I can’t wait to bring some heart, versatility and 110% effort to the group.”
Bassett-Scarfe is the eighth Cougar signed for the 2021 season 21-years old or younger, adding to an exciting crop of talent that will see the Cougars well into the future.
