We are excited to announce that the Cockburn Basketball Association has been awarded a $109,012 grant to enhance opportunities for women and girls in our community to engage in basketball and other sports.
This funding comes from the Australian Government’s $200 million Play Our Way program, which aims to break down barriers to participation for women and girls.
With this grant, we will implement scholarships for young girls entering the sport through Aussie Hoops or our domestic development program, assist develop the coaches running these sessions, and provide an opportunity to develop the mental side of the game for our sub-elite and elite women. These initiatives will help them develop their basketball skills while also creating pathways for those with high-performance potential.
“The Cockburn Basketball Association is incredibly proud to be a recipient of a grant that assists with the removal of barriers for women and girls in sport,” said CBA CEO Tyrone Thwaites
“We know how important basketball is for the social well-being of our community, with this funding going towards taking away financial barriers to entering the sport, providing the opportunity to upskill female coaches, as well as investing in the mental side of basketball with strong support for our performance athletes.
“To be able to invest in the south-west metropolitan area for three years as a core basketball provider for women and girls is something we do not take for granted. We look forward to providing greater opportunities as the sport continues to grow in the coming years.”
Member for Fremantle, the Hon Josh Wilson MP, highlighted the significance of this funding.
“Local sporting clubs, including the Cockburn Basketball Association, are witnessing remarkable growth in female participation. The project to promote girls’ participation in basketball will be warmly welcomed in our community.”
While we celebrate this achievement, we also look forward to further developments, as we work through the plans for a future Wally Hagan Stadium, which will only grow the already significant reach of the CBA..
We are eager to see the positive impact this funding will have and are excited to inspire the next generation of female athletes in Cockburn!
